Keeping it in the Family: Meet Bob and Claudia Hey
I, Claudia, grew up on this 120-acre farm. Back then, it was a dairy farm. I always loved this place so Bob and I moved back here after we were married. But there were no longer animals here, and I missed seeing them in the pastures and barns. Then one day, I saw an ad in a farm magazine for alpacas. They would be the perfect livestock for our farm!
We did our due diligence. We researched. We visited alpaca farms. We adapted outbuildings to become compatible with alpaca ranching. We even built an insulated, heated barn. Today, that barn is used for shearing and tending to alpacas who need extra care. It also houses our retail shop during the fall and winter months.
We bought our first three alpacas in 2005. Today, our farm is home to a herd of almost 40. Every year, seven or eight alpacas (called crias) are born here.
We have learned much about these incredible animals, usually the hard way. And we're still learning. We look forward to many more years of caring for our beloved alpacas.
