About our alpacas

OUR FARM'S NAME

Ad Astra Per Aspera is the Kansas state motto. In part, it means "to the stars." As we're both native Kansans — and our farm is in Kansas — we decided to name our farm Ad Astra Alpacas, after the motto.

To continue the theme, we name our alpacas after stars — and planets, and constellations and comets.

ALPACA NAMES

Currently, we have alpacas named for well-known heavenly bodies, such as Jupiter, Venus and Cassiopeia as well as lesser-known ones, such as Sidra and Bellatrix.

After a cria is born, we observe the little one for a few days to see if a particular name fits. Then, together, we pick the baby's name.

OUR FARM BY THE NUMBERS

  • We keep our alpaca herd around 30-40.
  • We strive for a 50/50 male and female ratio.
  • On average, six to eight babies are born each year. Baby alpacas are called crias.
  • We raise some of our alpacas as sires.
  • We raise some of our alpacas for their fiber.
